elevators

Czech people have a reputation for being cold. This is probably because they don't greet, say hello to, smile at, etc. strangers when they see them on the street or on the metro or in the grocery store. You get the idea. I've been told this is because Czech people think it is insincere.
However, for some reason this doesn't apply in elevators. Without fail, Czechs say goodbye to other people in the elevator as they exit. Also, it is standard for all persons remaining in the elevator to say goodbye to the departing person. I still haven't figured this one out.
But, I've also learned that Czech people are completely different once you get to know them. My experience has been that they're very kind, caring and giving people.
