Flagstaff

We celebrated the long weekend (though they're all long weekends right now) by heading up to Flagstaff to visit my friend Rhi for her birthday. My friend Brad flew in from the Bay Area as well, so we picked him up at the airport on Thursday night and headed up to the mountains Friday morning. There were threatening clouds most of the way up, and apparently it hailed in Flagstaff before we arrived, but it didn't rain on us while we were driving and it held off during Rhi's birthday party. Everyone was supposed to bring something that started with 'R' to the party; we brought a rhubarb pie from Rock Springs Cafe, a well-known place locally for its pies. Chelsey and I actually stopped there on the way back from Sedona, and decided that would be a good contribution to the party. Since the pie didn't last long, I think others thought so as well.

We didn't actually see any fireworks Saturday. The combination of steady rain in the afternoon and the high fire danger in the area made it unlikely they were going to have much of a fireworks show. Instead, we wandered around the downtown area, which is pretty neat. The area around Heritage Square and the train station has a lot of neat little shops, cafes and restaurants, and it was fun to stroll around.

It was also nice to be out of the heat. Rhi and I went for a run Saturday morning after sleeping in a bit; Rhi thought it was kind of hot, but it seemed like a nice temperature to me. Of course, the altitude had my mind on other things, like why isn't any oxygen reaching my legs?
