Prague is famous for, among other things, its marionettes. Chelsey and I decided we should experience this part of Czech culture by seeing the puppets in action, as it were, so we went to a performance of Mozart's "Don Giovanni" last night. The puppeteering was excellent, as the marionettes made some pretty elaborate moves. Though I'm not terribly familiar with the details of the original opera, I suspect last night's show was tilted a bit more toward the comic than Mozart's original intentions were. This was probably a calculated response to the, um, limited acting range of the wooden puppets. Some of the moves were pretty funny. My personal favourite was an unsuccessful attempt at CPR, while there were several times that characters fell down stairs or ran into doors. After an hour, however, I think the comic repetoire had been exhausted.
All in all, however, it was great fun, and I was quite impressed at how the puppeteers were able to make the marionettes move in time with the music, including some enviable dance steps.
There are a few more pictures
