curling

We had our curling lesson yesterday and it was great.
I had never curled before and the last time Jason did he was in junior high, so he was a little rusty. The lesson was geared toward newbies, though, so we fit right in.
They taught us about the game and its history, then we went down on the ice to practice.
I was a little concerned about balancing while sliding because balance and coordination aren't really my strong suits, but I did much better than I expected and didn't fall over even once. The most difficult thing for me was trying to judge how much power I needed to get the stone down to the other end of the ice. One time I'd throw it too hard and it'd go all the way out the back and so the next time I'd try to take some off and it'd wouldn't even make it half way. The thing that killed me, though, was that it felt like I'd hardly changed a thing. Clearly I need more practice.
They invited us to join a league they have coming up, but unfortunately it won't work into our schedule. Maybe sometime in the future ...

When I was in Lynn Lake, Manitoba, there were three buildings in town: the grocery store, the hotel, and the curling rink.
