Slumdog Millionaire

We had a somewhat rare night at the movies last night. Taking the advice of some of my relatives, we saw Oscar-frontrunner Slumdog Millionaire. It was pretty good, we were both impressed. It wasn't exactly what I expected, although in retrospect I'm not sure why. Some of the more graphic scenes took us a little by surprise, but in the end I thought it was a very good story and film. I don't know how it stacks up against the other Oscar contenders, since I haven't seen any of the others. But Chelsey read something that said Slumdog Millionaire would be the closest thing to a foreign-language film that has ever won Best Picture, which would be cool.

"Slumdog Millionaire" was entertaining, but a kind of high melodrama. It wanted to realistically depict Mumbai slum life (like "City of God" did for Brazilian favelas), then asked you to suspend disbelief for the more fantastic plot twists. The acting and cinematography saved a mediocre script.
