ready for the weekend

We are ready for the weekend. Yesterday was a tough day for us. We had some transportation issues (no tram, wrong bus) and school-related issues (no book, wrong book) -- I think we got a month's worth of bad luck out of our way in one day.
My last class of the day was very interesting, though, and it went very well. I am teaching a husband and wife and the class is actually in their home. He is some sort contractor and she is a journalist who writes about golf for magazines and also has written several books -- she showed them to me but I couldn't read them because they were in Czech.
Anway, we finished our lesson and I was about to get up and leave when she says "I cooked dinner for us" and ran into the kitchen. I was a little surprised but stayed and had a very good pasta salad with them. Then she told me she made dessert -- some sort of traditional Czech baked good. It was something like a sweet biscuit and some of them had poppyseeds in the middle and some had cream. When we finished, she said "now what do you want me to make next week." She said that she loves to cook and is excited to make things for me. So apparently I am going to get dinner with each lesson. She kept trying to get me to eat more of the desserts, but I told her I was full. I asked her if I could take one home for Jason and she got very excited again. She put several in a bag and she said that next week she wants me to report back how Jason liked them. (He tried one this morning and said they were very good.)
I have noticed that Czech people are incredibly friendly once you get to know them. It is a little strange because people don't smile or wave at each other when walking down the street, so sometimes it seems like they are a bit cold -- but if you actually can talk to them (which is often tough for us because we know so little Czech) people are really very nice.

connecting with people is what makes life worthwhile I figure... I know it's what has made my job interesting for so many years. I have heard the comment about people seeming "cold" a lot in reference to Europeans... unlike Western Canadians I'm told??... so I'm glad to hear that they are friendly once you get to know them. If everyone would make that effort to get past the "cold veneer"... what a better world it could be! Have a good weekend!
